Q. What duties and responsibilities are included in Companion or Sitter caregiver services?
A. Companions and sitters are usually utilized for seniors who are still active, self sufficient, and cognitive but may need assistance with day-to-day activities. Duties, responsibilities and expectations vary with each individualized case. Usually a member of the family meets with the companion or sitter and together they decide on a daily plan-of-care that best suits the need of the senior. At the end of each they report to the family any change in behavior, mood swings, medical concerns or other issues that may arise.
As a general rule companions and sitters usually provide all or some of the following duties:
- Companionship: Caregiver will provide companionship and socialization for your loved-one.
- Errands: Caregiver can accompany your senior loved-one to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, or with whatever errands in which they may need assistance.
- Light housekeeping: Caregivers can perform light housekeeping duties.
- Meal preparation: Caregivers know the importance of preparing good, nutritious food that meets your loved one’s dietary needs and specifications.
- Patrols environment: Caregivers are always alert to any potential fire or safety hazards that could pose possible harm or danger and compromise the safety of your senior’s environment.
- Emergency Response: Caregivers follow a predetermined emergency protocol for any medical or non- medical emergencies that could arise during the duration of their duties.
Q. What are the duties and qualifications of a Certified Nursing Assistant?
A. In addition to providing all of the companion or sitter duties listed above, CNA’s assist your loved one with:
- Walking, positioning and transferring from one location to another
- They make sure that proper nutrition is maintained
- They conduct medically related activities such as the taking of vital signs
- They assist with activities of daily living such as assistance with bathing, toileting, grooming, shaving, dental care, dressing, and eating
Q. What are the requirements for live-in care?
A. Family Private Care can refer a 24-hour live-in care caregiver who stays in your loved one’s home
- The caregiver should be able to have 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep in a separate room each night
- Both Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) and Companions are available for live-in care
Q. What is skilled nursing care, when is it needed and what levels of caregiver services is involved?
A.. Depending on your loved one’s medical condition and clinical prognosis, in addition to assistance with the activities of daily living by CNA caregivers, nursing care will also become a regular part of your loved one’s plan of care. This level of care requires the involvement of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse, (RN). Caregiver nursing services includes performing duties of a medical nature that may have resulted from recovering from surgery, a stroke, advanced stages of dementia, ALS, Parkinson’s, Traumatic Brain Injury, spinal injury or a terminal illness. Medically related nursing duties may include:
- Regularly assessing your loved one’s nursing needs
- Wound care including dressing changes,
- Tube feedings and IV administration
- Administering medications
- Weekly/Bi-weekly medication management (dispensing into med box)
- Checking on ventilator or tracheotomy
- Helping to establish and implement your loved one’s service care plan
- Report problems and progress to your loved one’s physician or other approved contact
Q. Is a state license required for businesses that provide private duty caregiver services and are there state-mandated guidelines?
A. Depending on the laws of individual states, businesses that provide private- duty caregiver services may or may not have state-licensing requirements. For instance, states such as Georgia and Florida have licensing laws in place, requiring businesses to comply with state-mandated guidelines — all for the protection of the end- user. Some states currently have no regulations or license requirements in place. This can pose concern for families who are depending on a company’s business integrity to provide caregivers who are trained, qualified and appropriately screened.
With beginnings in Florida in the mid-1990’s Family Private Care helped set the bar in exceptional caregiver standards that far exceeded state requirements. Continuing this tradition of excellence in its business practice the company entered the Georgia market in 2004 bringing the same expectations of quality caregiver service to the families they serve. With offices now providing services in Alabama — although not required by law –Family Private Care adheres to these same stringent guidelines for their clients in Alabama.
Q. Do all private care businesses provide the same services?
A. Unlike some private care companies who offer only companion and sitter services, Family Private Care offers medically- trained caregivers in addition to companion and sitter services. Having medically- trained caregivers available not only prevents disruption in the continuation of care but also eliminates the family’s burden of having to locate private duty nursing support on short notice.
All the family needs to do is alert Family Private Care that medical caregiver assistance is needed and nursing support will be arranged for short term or on-going care.
For more information please call our office any time, 24/hours per day, seven days per week.
